Bill Barr was GSSA’s first executive director, serving in that capacity from 1990 until 1999. Prior to that, he served as a local school superintendent as well as in a variety of other capacities during a long and distinguished career. Throughout that career, Bill became known for his ability to teach the art of school and system leadership, and he mentored many, many of Georgia’s most outstanding educators, all of whom benefited enormously from his tutelage. Thus, upon his retirement, GSSA decided to present an annual award in his honor.
The winners of the award have always been known for the same talent that Bill has: the ability to mentor others. And, that should be the focus of any nomination for the award. To be eligible, a superintendent must have five years or more of experience as a superintendent and be nominated by a fellow superintendent, RESA director, or cabinet-level member of GSSA.
Please take the time and make the effort to nominate a superintendent for this award who has distinguished herself/himself in this manner.
